I arrived within the evening opening hours but had to wait in the courtyard before anyone arrived. Then, though I had made a reservation, paying a deposit, the staff person said she could not find my reservation and I was charged the full price again. Rooms were clean, but the kitchen lacked basics like a knife for cutting veggies or bread - fortunately I had brought my own. I had to leave before breakfast was served so I can't comment on that.
I only have good memories for the one night I spent in Cherbourg's Youth Hostel. The staff was very friendly and considerate, either on the phone prior my arrival or at the reception desk on site. The premises are a former military building but you hardly guess it! I found the buildings neat and clean, practical and well equipped. The kitchen is in a separate building, functional and tidy. They also have a big room for breakfast and another one for relaxing. My bedroom had its own shower too.
I was not made aware of all the facilities when I arrived to check in. For ex. the use of the kitchen and its whereabouts, local maps, bus routes etc., These would have been very useful from day one. Apart from these minor things no other problems.
