Still a bit expensive, however a much better value than hotels. An excellent time.

Every time I book on line the balance owed that is stated by the on-line service is lower then what they charge me when I get to the Hostel, and the employees at the Hostel act like they have no idea what is going on, and just say that I have to pay what they feel the charge should be. It is not a lot of money, but it is the principal. I talked to a friend that uses the same hostel and said they have the same experience every time. It leaves me with the feeling that you're intentionally ripping people off.
The reason you were charge an additional fee at check in is due to you not being a member of Hostelling International. It is clearly stated on the hihostels.com website at time of booking...
"Membership can be purchased on arrival at hostel. Rates quoted assume guests are members of Hostelling International or a National Youth Hostel Association. A non-member supplement of 10% of rates quoted is payable on arrival at hostel."
This is standard throughout most HI hostels throughout the world - 100% of them in Canada, at least.
The front desk staff here in Lake Louise do know this (or should of), but maybe failed to communicate it with you properly. I will make sure we rectify that slip in communication.
I hope you enjoyed your stay.
All the best,
Assistant General Manager
I enjoyed my stay at HI hostel. Just not a fan of that ladder up to the loft. It's not very safe if you have bigger pieces of luggage. So I swapped beds with a roommate. You really have to be very careful when climbing down the ladder. But ok, that way it's more spacious, I admit!
Good place to stay in Lake Louise for an interesting price compared to others places!
But the breakfast is quite expensive
Nice hostel. Would have no problem in staying there again
